Meeting Agenda Personnel Resolutions Focus Consulting Pioneer Post PPSOPA Agreement Minutes #2845 Settlement

At the December 14, 2005 Board of Education meeting there were some comments by Superintendent Watson about a recent Pioneer Post (the Poughkeepsie High School Student Paper) article.  Superintendent Watson was unhappy with the article and felt that his quotes were taken out of context.  I obtained a copy of the article.  The quote from Pioneer Post Volume 8 Issue 1 December 2005 is:

Mr. Watson also said that academic weaknesses in the district have been caused by "a lack of respect" for students on the part of staff and that as superintendent, he could not combat that attitude with "only about two dozen master teachers."

"Too often, teachers see students as empty vessels rather than vessels that need to be molded."

Superintendent Watson stated that he was going to write an editorial [Superintendent Watson's word not mine] to appear in the next issue.  In defense of the article Adam Ciminello, Editor-In-Chief of the paper responded during the open comment period said he stood by the article and the writers that wrote it.  He also stated that the quotes were accurate.

Superintendent Watson responded by conceding that the quotes were accurate but were taken out of context.

Anyone interested in reading the entire article or the rest of the Pioneer Post should contact Poughkeepsie High School for a copy.
